1Update - Worst luggage I've ever owned.
By Dr. Arthur B. Epstein
This is a large bag for 10-14 days of travel. I've found that hardside luggage is preferred for international travel and this piece is reasonably light weight and holds a ton. Its construction does not inspire confidence however, especially for a Hartmann piece, but it does the job if you are on an extended trip. One negative (or positive if you like the look of well traveled luggage) is that it gets really beat up looking after just a single trip, yet has remained intact (for the most part) after about a dozen grueling multi-country jaunts. Also, if you are looking for organization look elsewhere. This is this is just a shell. There is no organization inside to speak of.

One vexing issue with this bag is that the handle attachment fittings are made of cheap poorly fabricated aluminum. Both handles have broken after a only a few months use due to metal fatigue. The first time a hotel in Taipei kindly had the top handle repaired and both fittings replaced with what appear to be sturdier versions with similar fit and appearance. On my last trip the side handle suffered the same fate. I intend to call Hartmann tomorrow to get replacement parts which I will install rather than going through the trouble of sending the entire bag back. I'll let you know if I am unsuccessful or if the new parts break again.

I would likely not buy this bag again, but here are things to like about it - especially the spinner wheels. Hopefully Hartmann will send revised fittings and the stress marks on the shell will not turn into holes or fractures. I expect this piece will last two years at the most - disappointing for a Hartmann.

**UPDATE** The replacement hardware arrived and was easily installed but shortly afterwards the luggage developed a large crack in its side at the beginning of an extended trip throughout Asia. Duct tape has been holding it together, but a few legs into the trip a side developed a new crack.

The luggage scuffs easily and looked terrible almost as soon as it was put in use. It is headed for the garbage when I get back to the states. The warranty is worthless and it hasn't lasted a year. I own several Hartmann pieces. They once made quality bags and they stood behind them. This is by far the worst piece of luggage I've even purchased and I fear it reflects a shift from quality to profit at any cost for Hartmann. I won't be buying another Hartmann.

2Not what I expected
By Rarguello
The Stratum rolls easily and looked nice brand new, specially the dark blue, easy to recognize at airports; yet, after the first trip the dark blue became a lighter blue wherever it was dented and scratched. I realize that luggage handlers "throw" luggage but with the Stratum the damage is clearly visible. Because of airline regulations it has not weighed more than 50 pounds and yet the handle has been broken twice. The airline actually replaced the luggage because it cracked, this only after a couple of trips, (bought it in October). Definitely not what I expected from Hartmann.

4Great for long trips, but can't withstand pressure
By Melody F9
I love this bag. It's great for extended trips and is excellent for overseas travel. I've long been a fan of spinner wheels and consider it a priority in any new bags. I also love that the top side is a separate zipped area so I can separate my belongings. I'm also just under 5 ft so dragging luggage behind me is not good for my shoulders or my posture. The main reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is a structural issue; perhaps Hartmann is aware as it's one of their cheapest designs. I've had this bag replaced by the airline (same airline) because upon arrival, the corner cracked. The first was on a return trip from Colorado Springs and upon landing at home, one corner was completely cracked. Luckily, the piece is also lined so nothing was exposed. The airline sent it through their repair program and when their contract repair shop in Dallas (I live in San Antonio) couldn't repair it, they called me within a couple of days to say a brand new replacement would be sent out from the company itself. It arrived within a couple of weeks on my doorstep. The second event happened upon my arrival for a business trip in London so I couldn't give up my luggage for repair at the airport. The airline (yes, the same one) gave me a "voucher" stating that I'd reported the damage immediately and that I had 30 days to turn in my luggage for repair. They also gave me a roll of their luggage tape and bade me well and goodbye. Sadly their tape does not stick on the bumpy surface of this bag. Twas an easy fix: I got some duct tape from an office supply store near my hotel and reinforced the hole. This time the hole was HUGE, nearly 6" long but again, the liner kept my belongings from falling out. Once again, I got a brand new Spinner delivered to my house within a few days. When I asked the repair shop about the damage, especially since it was a repeat incident, the gentleman said they saw it often with these bags (lightweight, flexible hardside, but not STIFF & metal hardside). Apparently the bag handlers will see it and probably put them on the bottom of a stack and there's probably just enough "give" that it cracks under the additional weight. So for my next trip, I'm carrying duct tape with me. I really do like this bag and the price is right for a Hartmann.
